Africa’s glaciers could vanish in next two decades warns UN report

Every part of the world seems to be affected due to climate change. A new report released on Tuesday claims that Africa’s rare glaciers could disappear in the next two decades due to climate change. In such a situation, there may be a fresh water crisis in front of the African people. Due to the impact of the flow of rivers, there will be a bad effect on agriculture and forests.

Report released ahead of UN climate conference

The report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and other agencies has been released ahead of the United Nations Climate Conference in Scotland starting October 31. It warned that Africa’s 1.3 billion population would be in a critical situation due to the continent’s warming faster than the global average, while Africa’s 54 countries account for less than 4 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Glaciers may end on these mountains

The new report focuses on shrinking glaciers on Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and Mount Rwenzori in Uganda, indicating widespread changes to come. The current rate of their melting remains higher than the global average, the report said. If this continues, by the 2040s glaciers will be completely extinct.

If glaciers disappear, this will be the effect

Releasing the report on Tuesday, WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said the future is at risk of large-scale displacement, hunger, and rising climate disasters such as drought and floods, and the lack of climate data in parts of Africa could threaten millions of people. It has a big impact on giving warnings.
