Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2023 passed in Lok Sabha

The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2023 (DPDP) has been passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday (August 7). Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav introduced this bill in the Lok Sabha on Thursday (August 3).

After this law is implemented, people will get the right to ask for details about their data collection, storage and processing. Companies will have to tell what data they are taking and what they are using the data for.

In the Bill, a provision has been made for fines ranging from a minimum of Rs 50 crore to a maximum of Rs 250 crore on those who violate its provisions. In the old bill it was up to Rs 500 crore.

What is digital personal data?

When you install a company’s app in your mobile, it asks you for many types of permissions, which include access to other things like camera, gallery, contact, GPS. After that that app can access your data on its own.

Many times these apps upload your personal data to their servers and then sell it to other companies. Till now users were not able to get this information from the app that what data they are taking from them and what they are using it for. This bill has been brought to protect such data.

The purpose of this bill is to fix accountability for data

The bill aims to make companies, mobile apps and business families, among others, accountable for collecting, storing and using users’ data. The Supreme Court, while giving a verdict, said that the right to privacy is a fundamental right, after which the work on the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill started.
