Talking while driving could now lead to cancellation of license

The Uttarakhand High Court has passed orders to cancel the licenses of mobile users while driving the vehicle. At the same time, the State Government has been asked to ensure strict compliance with Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Not allowing motorcycle and scooter drivers to drive without the ISI mark helmets , and making SSP, CO and Kotwal accountable for them.

A bench of Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Lokpal Singh heard a public interest petition filed by Nainital’s Avidit Nauliyal. In the matter, the bench has clearly stated that the government should not issue licenses to minors nor allow them to drive.

It has also been instructed to the Government to prohibit any vehicle carrying of more than the length of the vehicle, steel pillars, pipes etc. It was stated in the PIL that in the absence of strict compliance with Section 128 and 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the graph of accidents is continuously increasing. Under Section 128 of the Motor Vehicle Act, there is a provision to ban more than two rides on two-wheeler vehicles and Section 129 prohibits the running of vehicles without helmets.
