Team India breaks multiple records in series win over Sri Lanka

A series of first’s for Virat and his team:

    • First test series win in India’s 83 year history of test cricket after being one down in the first test
    • First test series win for India on Lankan soil in 22 years
  • First test series win for Virat Kohli as captain

A collective effort by Team India in the 3rd and final test against neighbors Sri Lanka saw them victorious by 117 runs in the third and final test. Every player chipped in with their performances throughout the keenly fought series. In the first test India dominated around 90% of the match but a magical spell of spin bowling by Rangana Herath led to a batting collapse with India eventually losing the match, the second match saw team India bounce back courtesy gutsy hundred by opener Lokesh Rahul followed by great bowling spells by R Ashwin and Amit Mishra. The test though would be remembered for being Kumar Sangakarra’s farewell test. Both teams then headed to Colombo with all to play for in the third and final test. Batting first team India scored 312 on the back of a splendid century by comeback man Cheteshwar Pujara. The Lankans got of to a terrible start but were able to pull things back and reach the 200 run mark. The hosts were set a near improbable target of 386 to win the series and for a session it seemed Sri Lanka would be able to save the test after gallant efforts by their captain Angelo Mathews and Perera, but  Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s perseverance paid off when Perera (70), engaged in a brilliant fightback with skipper Angelo Mathews, needlessly reverse-swept to give a catch to Rohit Sharma at point. The dismissal ended a 135-run sixth-wicket partnership that had not only raised hopes of Sri Lanka salvaging a draw but even pulling off an improbable victory on the final day. It took just three balls with the new ball for Ishant Sharma to drill the final nail into Sri Lanka’s coffin when he had Angelo Mathews out LBW for 110 on Day Five of the third and final Test at Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC), Colombo. Ashwin then wrapped it up by removing tail-enders Rangana Herath and Dhammika Prasad in successive overs. His four-wicket haul in the second innings helped the leading wicket-taker of the series finish with 21 scalps.
