India defeats Sri Lanka by 302 runs; qualifies for World Cup semi final

Team India’s undefeated campaign continued for 7th consecutive match. The men in blue defeated Sri Lanka by 302 runs in the 33rd match of the ICC World Cup. In the match played at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, India, batting first, scored 357 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs on the back of half-centuries of Shubman Gill(92) , Virat Kohli (88) and Shreyas Iyer (82). In response, Sri Lankan batsmen succumbed to the Indian bowling attack. Sri Lankan team could score only 55 runs after losing all the wickets in 19.4 overs. They were in danger of being bundled out for the lowest score in ODI’s when they were 6 wickets down for 14 runs at the end of first power play. Eight Sri Lankan batsmen could not even reach double figures, out of which five Sri Lankan batsmen could not even open their account. This score of Sri Lanka is its joint third lowest score and fourth lowest score of the World Cup. This is the second consecutive game between the two nations when Sri Lanka have been bundled out in double digits. Earlier in Asia Cup 2023, they were all out for 50 runs.

This is India’s seventh consecutive win in the World Cup 2023 and with this victory, India has made it to the semi-finals of the World Cup 2023. This is the fourth biggest win in ODI cricket in terms of runs. Earlier in January 2023, India had defeated Sri Lanka by 317 runs, which is the biggest win in terms of runs in the history of ODI cricket. This is the second biggest World Cup win in terms of runs and India’s biggest win in World Cup history.

Sri Lanka’s start to chase the target of 358 runs was like a nightmare. Opener Pathum Nissanka returned to the pavilion on the very first ball. Bumrah had him LBW. In the second over, Mohammed Siraj continued from where he left off in the Asia Cup, he got Dimuth Karunaratne LBW on the very first ball. Both the opening batsmen returned to the pavilion without opening their account. Sadeera Samarawickrama was caught out on the fifth ball of the second over. Sadira also could not score runs.

In the fourth over, Siraj clean bowled Kusal Mendis on the very first ball. Captain Mendis could score only one run. Then came the turn of in-form Mohammed Shami who wreaked havoc and took five consecutive wickets. Ravindra Jadeja ended Sri Lanka’s innings by dismissing Madunshaka. Mohammed Shami gave the best performance of his career. Shami took five wickets for 18 runs. Mohammad Siraj took three wickets, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja took one wicket each.
