Section 144 imposed in Shaheen Bagh area

The Delhi Police has imposed Section 144 in the Shaheen Bagh area and has deployed a heavy police force as a precaution. The Hindu Army on Saturday announced that it will end the Shaheen Bagh protest.The protesters here have been sitting on a dharna against the Citizenship Amendment Act since 15 December.

In Shaheen Bagh, Delhi, Joint Commissioner DC Srivastava said that heavy police have been deployed here as a precaution. “Our aim is to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident from happening”, he said.

At the same time, the petition filed in the Supreme Court regarding the demonstration in Shaheen Bagh is now to be heard on 23 March. The petition demanded protection for the protesters. Most of the protesters against the citizenship law are women and children.

Protests have been going on in Shaheen Bagh since December, people are demanding the withdrawal of the Citizenship Amendment Act. In the last hearing on Shaheen Bagh, the Supreme Court had said that no public place can be held for an eternity. However, no order was given to vacate the road then.

A bench of Justice SK Kaul and Justice KM Joseph had said that there is a law and people have complaints against it. The case is pending in court. Despite this, some people are protesting. They have the right to perform but you cannot block the roads. Such an area cannot have indefinite performances. If you want to protest, it must be in the designated location for the agitation.

The court had said that the protests have been going on in Shaheen Bagh for a long time but it cannot cause inconvenience to others. With this, the bench said that it would not issue any instructions without hearing the other side. The court posted the matter for further hearing on 17 February. In fact, thousands of people have been sitting on Road Number 13A (Mathura Road to Kalindi Kunj) since December 2019 in Shaheen Bagh in protest against the Civil Amendment Act. This main road connects Delhi to Noida, Faridabad and millions of people use this road daily.
