Underground lake discovered in Nainital

A new underground lake has been found about 400 meters away from Naini Lake. This has come to the fore in the survey of IIT Roorkee. According to the survey report, the new lake is about 200 meters long and up to five meters deep. After getting this lake, the concerns of leakage from Naini lake have also come to an end. The lower part of Nainital has remained sensitive for four decades. Its treatment and survey work started here after the landslide in Ballia drain in 1980. It was believed that the landslide was taking place due to water leakage in Naini lake. For its survey, many agencies including IIT Roorkee, Wadia Institute, Dehradun, GSI were mobilized. Meanwhile, the survey team of IIT Roorkee conducted an underground survey of 70 meters area towards Bhowali, about 400 meters from Naini lake. Now its report has come. The report has revealed that the water which is leaking here is not coming from Naini lake but due to a newly discovered underground lake.

Despite spending crores of rupees in four decades, the local people have not got rid of landslide threat. Many people also had to leave their houses due to the threat of landslides. The discovery of the new lake will also help prevent landslides in a large area of Balia drain for over four decades.
