World Number Novak Djokovic who earlier in January won the Australian Open was sent crashing out of the Indian Wells Masters by Philipp Kohlschreiber. The 35 year old German won in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-4 scoreline in an hour and 38 minutes. This was his career win over Djokovic in 10 head to head. “It’s a very special win today,” Kohlschreiber said. “I had a great strategy to play against him. I had two good wins [entering the match]. So everything came together. [It’s] very special to beat the No. 1. Unfortunately the tournament is not over. I have to get back tomorrow with a great mindset. Today I want to take the moment, celebrate with my coach. I’ve got a lot of messages. I know it’s a very special victory today.” His last win over Djokovic came back 10 years ago on the red clay of Paris.
Elsewhere, Djokovic’s counterpart in the ladies side Naomi Osaka was ousted by an inform Belinda Benicic 3-6,1-6. Both the World number 1’s and current Australian Open Champions were sent packing from the Indian Wells. Djokovic’s chief rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer breezed into the Round of 16 with straight sets win.
