For Bata India Limited, a 3 rupees paper bag turned out to be more expensive than that. In lieu of this, the company has been imposed a fine of Rs 9,000. Besides, the Chandigarh Consumer Forum has also reprimand for services and the payment of paper bags. The forum has instructed the company to give a free carry bag to all its customers who purchase the goods.
Sector 23-B resident Dinesh Prasad had bought a pair of shoes from the Bata Showroom located in Sector-22D in April. For shoes, Dinesh paid Rs 402 to the store, the bill included a paper bag. He complained to the Chandigarh Consumer Forum about 3 rupees refund of paper bag. Earlier the company had denied the customer’s allegations. However, the forum has imposed a fine on the company.
According to Dinesh, he had asked for 3 rupees refund of paper bag and had questioned the company’s service. The Consumer Forum said that it is wrong to force the customer to pay for the paper bag. It shows poor service of the company. The Company should provide the paper bag free of charge.
The forum said that if the companies are really worried about the environment then they should give their customers an environmentally friendly bag. The forum has asked Bata Limited to return the paper bag money in its possession. Apart from this, in addition to 1000 thousand rupees fine it has been ordered to pay 3 thousand rupees to the customer for mental harassment. Apart from this, the company has also been asked to deposit Rs. 5000 in the Legal Aid Account of Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
