Monsoon rains break over 30 year old record for Naini lake water levels

Due to good monsoon rains, Naini lake has broken the record of 31 years. This is the first time since 1990 that lake is at its highest water level of 12 feet for 22 days. Apart from Naini Lake, all the other lakes of the district are also full this time. Sukhatal is also filled with water after about eight years.

The water reaching the Mall Road of the lake is attracting tourists a lot this time. This is the situation when there has not been full monsoon rains in Nainital district. So far, 1181 mm of average rainfall has been recorded in monsoon while the average rainfall of the district is 1306 mm.

For the first time since 1990, the lake’s water level has remained at its highest level for the longest time, says Ramesh, in-charge of lake control. According to him, this situation arose after decades when the gates of the lake have to be opened frequently when the rains increase.

The water volume of Bhimtal Lake remains at the top of the lakes of Nainital district. This time Bhimtal lake is reaching its highest water level at 44 feet. To control it, the Irrigation Department is opening the regular gate and controlling it at 40 feet. The water level in big lakes like Naukuchiatal, Bhimtal and Sattal remains very good.
