Viswanathan Anand defeats Magnus Carlsen in Norway Chess tournament

Indian chess player Viswanathan Anand defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen in the seventh round of Norwegian chess to finish fourth in the blitz category. Anand was defeated by Anish Giri of Netherlands in the fourth round and Maxime Vachier Lagrave of France in the ninth round. Anand scored five points in the ten-player blitz category.

Viswanathan Anand started by defeating Aryan Tari of Norway and drew with Wesley So in the second round. In the third round, he defeated Veselin Topalov, while his tie with Teimour Radjabov ended in a draw.

America’s Wesley So topped with 6.5 points, while second-ranked Carlsen was one point behind him. Giri finished third. The classical class of ten players will begin on Tuesday evening with Anand playing Vachier Lagrave in the first round. Anand won the Superweight Rapid title of the Grand Chess Tour last week. The legendary Grand Master of India won the rapid category title with six wins and two draws. In such a situation, all eyes were on him in this tournament.

The tournament will be played from 30 May to 10 June on the basis of nine round robin matches. The total prize money of the tournament is Rs 2 crore. Recently, India’s young Grandmaster R Pragananda also made a lot of headlines by defeating Carlsen. Pragananda became a Grand Master in 2016.
