Emergency declared in economically struggling Sri Lanka

After the collapse of Sri Lanka’s economy, people have taken to the streets and there is a period of violence and uproar in the whole country including the capital Colombo. After the uncontrollable situation, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa declared emergency late last night.

People are appealing to the President to step down

Thousands gathered outside President’s building yesterday to protest. Angry people are appealing to the President to step down. Common people feel that the policies of the current government are responsible for the economic condition of the island nation. Violence continues in Colombo.

Security forces and common people have come face to face. Fire gas was released to drive away the people. 10 people have also reportedly been injured in Sri Lanka in the violence so far. So more than 50 people have also been detained. The situation got so bad that the Special Task Force had to be called, but the situation is not coming under control.

There is acute shortage of fuel and gas in the country

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa issued a gazette announcing the imposition of emergency from April 1. In Sri Lanka, the government had to take a big decision, because the public has taken to the streets in anger. The reason for public anger is that there has been a severe shortage of fuel and gas in the country. The Sri Lankan government has a huge shortage of foreign exchange reserves to import oil. As a result, people have to stand in line for many hours for petrol and diesel.

Milk more expensive than petrol

The Economic struggles of the country can be gauged from the fact that the education department has run out of paper and ink. The exams have been postponed indefinitely. Sri Lanka’s 22 million people are also facing prolonged power cuts. Power is being cut for 13-14 hours. Milk has become more expensive than petrol for the people here and even buying bread is getting troublesome.
