FIFA World Cup 2022: Argentina crowned champions after 36 years

FIFA World Cup-2022 ended at the height of excitement. Argentina finally won the final match. They achieved the distinction of becoming the FIFA World Cup champion for the third time. Both the teams were tied 2-2 till the stipulated time at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar. After this, there was one goal each in extra time, which made the score 3-3. Then the decision was taken by penalty shootout where Argentina won 4-2. With this, the first world title was added to Messi’s name. He scored 2 goals in the match. All three goals for France were scored by 23-year-old star footballer Kylian Mbappé.

Penalty shootout decision for the third time

This happened for the third time in history that the final of the FIFA World Cup was decided by a penalty shootout. In the year 1994 Brazil vs Italy and in 2006 Italy vs France, the winner was decided by a penalty shootout. Argentina lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy for the third time. They had earlier won this glittering trophy in 1978 and 1986. Messi won many matches, played a key role in many, won club trophies but this was his first title at the global level.

Argentina dominated the first half

Argentina showed its aggressive attitude in the opening minutes itself. Legendary Lionel Messi gave his team the lead in the 23rd minute when he scored the team’s first goal from the penalty spot. As soon as this goal was scored, the fans of Argentina and Messi present in the field started cheering. After 13 minutes, Angel Di Maria scored the second goal of the team. By half time the score was 2-0 in favor of Argentina.

Mbappé brought back France in closing moments

In the beginning of the second half, France made some efforts but could not get success. Then Kylian Mbappé got his team back on penalty in the 80th minute. Mbappé again scored his and the team’s second goal in the very next minute. After this there was no goal and the score was tied at 2-2 till the scheduled time  of 90 minutes.

Extra time was again taken in the match. Lionel Messi did his magic yet again and scored a goal in the 109th minute. This was his second goal of the match. He scored but video replays were seen for this. Actually, the French player saved the shot but he was standing inside the goal line. Mbappé then scored France’s third goal and his hattrick on penalty in the 118th minute. With this the score became 3-3. Then Argentina won in the penalty shootout.
