Government planning to set up airstrip near China border in Chamoli

The Governmen Uttarakhand is preparing to make a runway between the Gairsain  of Chamoli district and Chobatia of Almora district in collaboration with the Center. For this, the joint teams of the Central and the Army have also done extensive surveys. The marked land has been found suitable for the runway. Due to this region being close to the China border, it is considered to be very important from a strategic point of view.

Chamoli district of Uttarakhand is situated on the Indo-China border. After the ongoing agitation against China, the eyes of the Center are also on the international border of Uttarakhand with China. There is ongoing preparation to increase security here. Regular communication between the Army and Air Force officers is ongoing with the State Government.

There is also a strong base of the army in Uttarakhand. Along with Dehradun, several units of Army are deployed at places like Lansdowne, Ranikhet, Gauchar etc. Air Force is not very strong in Uttarakhand yet.
Two important air bases of Air Force are in Saharanpur and Bareilly. From here, the distance of the China border from Uttarakhand is more than an hour away. In view of this, the Air Force officials had interacted with the top officials in Uttarakhand including Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat last month.

In this, the Air Force informed about the strategic importance of the proposed units in Uttarakhand as well as informing them about the proposed units. Part of this was also to create an airstrip in Uttarakhand. Although there has been a proposal for the construction of a runway from the Union Civil Aviation Ministry here, it is believed that this is being made for the use of the army.

Assuming the sources, the state government has been asked to provide the land in this regard. For this, two rounds of meetings have been held with officials of the Central and Army officers with the Uttarakhand Government.
