Historic Jhanda Mela 2025 to begin from March 19

Dehradun’s historic Jhanda Mela, a symbol of love, harmony and faith, will begin on Panchami, March 19, 2025 with the hoisting of the flag. Thousands of devotees from across the country and abroad will arrive to witness this moment. The process of taking down the old flag will begin in the morning on this day.
Every year, a historic fair begins at Shri Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib on the fifth day of Holi with the hoisting of the flag. A large number of devotees from across the country and abroad arrive there. The fair management committee has started preparations for the preparations of the fair and the arrangements for the stay of the devotees. Religious programs will begin from March 8.
Madhusudan Semwal, chief administrator of Shri Jhanda Ji Mela Organizing Committee, Shri Darbar Sahib, said that a meeting will be held soon in which the fair-related programs will be discussed and finalized. Accommodation arrangements for the Sangat will be made in all SGRR schools, Dharamshalas and hotels. These days, painting and decoration work is being done in the Darbar Sahib premises.
This time, the flag will be hoisted with a new flagstaff. The new flagstaff has been brought from the Dudhli forest and placed in the Shri Guru Ram Rai Public School Bombay Bagh premises. On Saturday, artisans and devotees who arrived here from Punjab are busy carving it. There has been a tradition of changing the flagstaff of the flag every three years in the Jhanda Mela.
This is the historical importance of the Jhanda Mela
Shri Guru Ram Rai Maharaj, the eldest son of the seventh Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Har Rai, was born in 1646 in Kiratpur, Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. He chose Dehradun as his place of penance and by hoisting a huge flag for public welfare in Darbar Sahib, he gave the message to the devotees to take blessings from the flag. Chaitrawadi Panchami, the fifth day of Holi is celebrated as the birthday of Shri Guru Ram Rai Maharaj and from this day onwards, Jhanda Mela is organised.
