7.5 magnitude earthquake jolts Taiwan

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan on Wednesday (April 3). Its shocks were felt even in Japan. After this earthquake, tsunami alert has been issued in Taiwan, Japan and Philippines. The Meteorological Department of Japan has predicted waves of up to 3 meters i.e. about 10 feet in the sea. At present there is no news of loss of life or property.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Hualien city of East Taiwan. According to the Taiwanese Central Weather Bureau, this is the most dangerous earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years. Before this, there was an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude in 1999. More than 2 thousand people had died then.

Every year 20 thousand earthquakes occur in the world

Every year many earthquakes occur in the world, but their intensity is less. The National Earthquake Information Center records about 20,000 earthquakes every year. Out of these, 100 earthquakes are such which cause more damage. An earthquake lasts for a few seconds or a few minutes. The longest lasting earthquake in history occurred in the Indian Ocean in 2004. This earthquake lasted for 10 minutes.
