National Campaign Titled ‘MUJHE JINE DO’ being launched by water, an ngo ,dedicated to women’s welfare
Haldwani/Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat will launch a National campaign titled ‘Mujhe Jine do ‘ (let Me live) an initiative against growing female foeticide and increasing crime against women in the hill state as well as other parts of the country on October 29, 2015 at Gadarpur, Udham Singh Nagar .
The campaign ‘Mujhe Jine do’ an initiative of the Women’s Association for Training, Empowerment and Resettlement (WATER), a Non Government Organisation working for Woman welfare is initially being launched in hill state Uttarakhand with support from SIDCUL.
“In spite of Over six decades of independence discrimination against girl children, female foeticide, an act of aborting foetus because it is a female and crime against women is on constant increase. Due to rampant practise of female foeticide close to a million girls are killed annually. This further leads to many other serious problems like widening of male-female sex ratio. According to the data available with UNICEF, the sex ratio in India in 2011 has come to 919 females to 1000 males. Further, 80% of the Indian districts have recorded a fall in the sex ratio with Punjab being the worst. It is on increase in Uttarakhand also “ Said Ms Shilpi Arora, President Women’s Association for Training, Empowerment and Resettlement (WATER), who is also General Secretary, Congress , Uttarakhand.
“During the launch of ‘Mujhe Jine do’ campaign in Gadarpur , about 10,000 young people and couples and girls from various parts of Udham Singh Nagar and near by cities are expected to participate and pledge and generate awareness about female foeticide, genderinequality, sexual harassment and to curb violence against women and girls”said Ms Shilpi Arora .
‘’Major highlight of the Mujhe Jine do campaign initiative will be a charity Show sponsored by SIDCUL which will include screening of short films on foeticide, child abuse, harassment and domestic violence, Kumaoni and Garwali folk dances and singing performance highlighting the vital issue, ramp walks by school girls in three batches of 20 girls each in different age groups of upto Five, Ten and 15 years of age. The participants will carry social message. A performance show by eminent personalities and artists including Ashok Masti, a well known Punjabi singer , Dance performance and singing by eminent TV personalities including Beat Bakers of India Got talent season Fvefme, Smita Bansal of Balika Vadhu fame, Jyanti Bhatia of Sasural Simranka serial fame and Pawandeep Rajan, winner, Voice of India 2015”said MsShilpi Arora.
“Among eminent personalities present on the occasion will include Uttarakhand Cabinet Ministers Yashpal Arya and Dr Harak Singh Rawat, Uttarakhand Congress President Kishore Upadhyaya , Sanjay Kapoor and Parkash Joshi both AICC secretaries and eminent local leaders and citizens .”she said
“ According to 2011 census, the child sex ratio in India was 919 females to 1000 males, which declined from 927 females to 1000 males in the previous decade. Haryana, which is supposed to be one of the richest states in India, takes the top most position in skewed sex ratio. Other prominent states are Punjab, Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and now Uttarakhand “ Said MS Arora.
“ Similarly, despite active debates among lawmakers in Parliament, awareness campaigns and a host of measures to curb violence against women, the picture in 2014 is no less grim. If you are a woman, whether you grew up in a rural or urban setting, lived at home or ventured into a new city away from family, work in an office or manage your house full-time—the fear of sexual harassment is real and constant and it’s getting worse.Crimes against women have more than doubled over the past ten years, according to latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau.” Said Shilpi Arora
“As many as 2.24 million crimes against women were reported over the past decade: 26 crimes against women are reported every hour, or one complaint every two minutes, reveals an IndiaSpend analysis based on the last decade’s data. The semantic meaning of “crime against women” is direct or indirect physical or mental cruelty to women. Crimes directed specifically against women and in which only women are victims are characterised as “crimes against women”.said Ms Arora.
“Ironically, female foeticide takes place in a country where people worship various forms of Goddesses, and where females are considered as MaaLaxmi’s incarnation and where young girls are worshipped and people touch their feet for blessings. But even then, the intentional killing of the girl child continues. Such is the double standards of our society. Right to education, health and empowerment are the fundamental rights of every Indian woman. The horrible illegal practice of female foeticide has to be stopped by harsh laws and change in the mind-set of the people. Save the girl child for a better tomorrow” added Ms Arora
