Student protest in Mumbai ends after 4 hours; local trains resume service

Local trains were stopped in Mumbai on Tuesday morning by Railway apprentice students demanding permanent jobs. Railway traffic had been affected for nearly 4 hours because of the agitation. Now the trains are being gradually being moved. At the place where the students were protesting, a track has been evacuated. About 4 hours later, the movement is now over.

On the demand of permanent job in the railway, Trainee apprentices students had blocked the track between Matunga and Dadar. The passengers were facing considerable difficulty due to the disruption of the students.

Demonstrators demanded that 20% quota be removed and permanent jobs should be given. Protesters say that they have been raising their demand peacefully for the last 4 years, but no response has been given by the government. Meanwhile, the Central Railway has issued a statement saying that there is a provision of training in the Railway apprenticeship and there is no arrangement for job placement.

 Sandeep Deshpande of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena said to Aaj Tak that till the Railway Minister Piyush Goyal does not give assurances in writing, no one will move from there. Due to this movement, the work of Mumbai’s famous dabbawala’s has also been affected. Dabbawalas extend their service through local trains only from Kurla area.

Among the demonstrations, the Chief Pros Central Railway has said that there are difficulties on the Matunga-Dadar track, which is being handled by the Railway Police. Due to protest, there is a lot of trouble coming to the railway station. There is a huge presence of students around the track and the station.
