UP Minister dies after testing positive for Coronavirus

Kamal Rani Varun, Minister of State in Uttar Pradesh Government, died on Sunday. On 18 July she was found infected with Corona. She was undergoing treatment at the SGPGI Hospital in Lucknow, the capital of UP. She breathed her last on Sunday morning. This is the first death of a minister due to Corona in Uttar Pradesh.

Kamal Rani was the Minister of Technical Education in the Yogi government. After the health condition of Minister of State Kamal Rani Varun deteriorated, her sample was sent to the civil hospital for investigation. Her report came back positive on 18 July. She was admitted to SGPGI after the report came out.

Kamal Rani Varun was born on 3 May 1958 in Lucknow. She was married to Kishan Lal Varun, a resident of Kanpur. Kishan Lal was an administrative officer in LIC and a committed volunteer of the RSS.

She started her political career by working for the people from the slums. She started teaching children at Seva Bharti’s Seva Kendra and imparting training on sewing, embroidery and weaving to poor women.

This is how political career started

In 1989, she became a councilor on the BJP ticket from Dwarikapuri ward in Kanpur. She won the councilor’s election for the second time in 1995. The BJP fielded her from Ghatampur (reserved) parliamentary seat in 1996. She won the election for the second time from the same seat in 1998. However, in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, she lost to BSP’s Pyarelal Sankhwar by just 585 votes. While a Member of Parliament, Kamalrani also served on the Parliamentary Advisory Committees of the Ministry of Labor and Welfare, Industry, Women Empowerment, Official Language and Tourism.
