Water level in Naini lake reaches 5 year low

The water level of Naini Lake, considered the lifeline of Nainital in Uttarakhand, has dropped to 4.7 feet, which is the lowest in the last five years. The fall in water level has raised concerns among the local people and the administration about a possible water crisis ahead of the summer season.

This winter, the tourist city of Nainital received very little rain and snowfall, raising the possibility of the lake’s water level falling to a record low in the summer months. Last year too, Nainital had to face a similar situation, but the monsoon compensated for the lack of rain.

The lake was provided with plenty of water, due to which the water level rose to 12 feet. Not only this, the state’s irrigation department had to drain out excess water from the lake at regular intervals. However, this year the city received very little rain and snowfall in the winters.
