Two of the world’s most sweetest apple species on brink of extinction

Due to snowfall in the Himalayan region for the last few years, the world’s two most sweet and delicious apple species are on the verge of extinction. According to recent research, due to receding Snow Line and increasing heat, the yield of ‘Golden Delicious’ and ‘Red Delicious’ species has decreased by 90% in four decades.

According to Dr D. P. Dobhal, senior scientist of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, snowline has gone back almost 40 to 50 meters in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh on an average. Similarly, the glaciers have also retracted a long way.

He told that in the Himalayas five thousand meters high areas used to snow during all year round, but now it is raining instead of snow falling in June, July and August. Golden and red delicious apples require temperatures from zero to three degrees for approximately 1200 to 1400 hours, that is 45 days, but these crops are not receiving even half the snowy conditions. Instead, uneven rains, hail are ruining the harvest.

Apple farming occurs at an altitude of 3400 meters

Many species of apples are in slopes from the Himalayas. The high quality delicious species is found to be 3400 meters. Spur varieties can be grown at a height of 1500 meters. There are around 7500 apple varieties world wide with Red Delicious and Golden Delicious being the sweetest of them all.
