Ahmedabad to host Common Wealth Games 2030

India is set to host the Commonwealth Games for the second time, after New Delhi in 2010. Delegates from 74 Commonwealth member states and territories approved India’s bid at the Commonwealth Games General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26th, confirming Ahmedabad, Gujarat, as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Minutes after Ahmedabad was selected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, 20 Garba dancers and 30 Indian drummers performed in the General Assembly Hall. Garba is a traditional folk dance of Gujarat.
What did the Commonwealth Games President say?
Commonwealth Games President Donald Rukare said, “This marks the beginning of a new golden era for Commonwealth Sport.” Following the ‘Games Reset,’ we are heading to Glasgow 2026 in great shape to welcome 74 Commonwealth teams, and then set our sights on Ahmedabad 2030 for the special centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games.
100 Years of the Commonwealth Games
The first Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930, and 2030 marks the 100th anniversary of the Games, so the 2030 edition in Ahmedabad is expected to be one of the most significant in the event’s history. The four-year Commonwealth Games were held in Birmingham, England, in 2022, and Glasgow, Scotland, will now host the Games in 2026.
