BGT 2024-25: Ashwin announces retirement from International cricket

India’s veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket. He announced this in a press conference after the Gabba Test which ended in a draw. Ashwin reached the press conference with captain Rohit Sharma and announced it there. Before retirement, Ashwin was seen sitting with Virat Kohli in the dressing room. During this, Kohli also hugged him. Ashwin was a part of Team India in the Adelaide Day Night Test.

Ashwin has made many records for India

This 38-year-old spinner has made many records for India. He is seventh among the highest wicket takers in Tests. Ashwin has 537 wickets in 106 Tests. Seven wickets for 59 runs is his best bowling. During this, his average has been 24.00 and strike rate 50.73. Ashwin is second after Anil Kumble among the Indian highest wicket takers in Tests. Kumble had 619 Test wickets to his name. Ashwin’s announcement is surprising, as he was the edge of the Indian spin attack on Indian soil.

Ashwin has 37 five-wicket hauls in Tests, which is the highest by any Indian bowler. Kumble took five wickets in an innings 35 times in Tests. Overall, the record for taking the most five-wicket hauls in an innings is held by Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan. He did this 67 times. Ashwin is jointly second with Shane Warne.

6 Test Centuries; 14 Half-Centuries

Apart from playing 106 Tests, Ashwin was also a part of Team India in 116 ODIs and 65 T20s. He took 156 wickets in ODIs and 72 wickets in T20s. His best bowling in ODIs is four wickets for 25 runs and four wickets for eight runs in T20s. His economy in ODIs has been 4.93 and in T20s it has been 6.90. Apart from this, Ashwin has also scored a lot of runs in Tests. He has 3503 runs in Tests. During this, his average has been 25.75. Ashwin’s highest score in Tests has been 124 runs. He has scored six centuries and 14 half-centuries. Apart from this, he has scored 707 runs in ODIs at an average of 16.44 and 184 runs in T20s at a strike rate of 114.99.

Ashwin will be seen playing for CSK in IPL

Ashwin made his international cricket debut on June 5, 2010 in an ODI against Sri Lanka in Harare. At the same time, he made his T20 debut on June 12, 2010 against Zimbabwe in Harare. Ashwin’s Test debut was in 2011 against West Indies in Delhi. He is also the player who has won the most Player of the Series awards in Tests. He has won the Player of the Series award 11 times in Tests. In this case, he is at par with Muralitharan. Ashwin was part of the Indian team that won the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.

Ashwin has been a regular part of India in Tests. However, he was out of the team in ODIs. He had been coming and going in the team in T20s. Now this legendary Indian spinner will be seen playing in the IPL. He has been included in the Chennai Super Kings team.
