Errani-Vavassori successfully defend mixed doubles crown at US Open 2025

Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori displayed a brilliant game and defended their US Open mixed doubles title by defeating the pair of Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud. The Italian pair of Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori defeated third seeded Poland’s Iga Swiatek and Norway’s Casper Ruud 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 in the final of the mixed doubles match on Wednesday night.
Swiatek-Ruud defeated the top pair in the semi-finals
Earlier, the third seeded pair of Swiatek and Ruud defeated top seeded Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper 3-5, 5-3, 10-8 in a tiebreaker in the first semi-final. After this, in the second semi-final, Errani and Vavassori defeated Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison 4-2, 4-2.
The new format was criticized
Errani and Vavassori were among the many players who had earlier criticized the new format but after becoming champions, they had smiles on their faces and also thanked the audience. Vavassori said,’ I think it was wonderful to play on this court in front of so many spectators and I want to thank from the bottom of my heart for this atmosphere’. “These two days will be really important for doubles in the future. We showed that doubles players are great players, and this product can grow,” said Vavassori.
Organisers overhauled the mixed doubles format this year to feature eight entries based on combined singles rankings and eight wildcards, a move that produced a star-studded lineup and sent attendances surging but prompted an outcry from several top doubles players.
