French Open 2024: Third consecutive title for Iga Swiatek

World number one Iga Swiatek’s brilliant performance continued at the French Open. Iga won the women’s singles title for the third consecutive time in the French Open tennis tournament by defeating Jasmine Paolini in straight sets in the final on Saturday. Poland’s Swiatek easily defeated Paolini, who made it to the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, 6-2, 6-1.

Iga Swiatek was trailing 1-2 at one point in the first set, but after that she won 10 games in a row. With this she went ahead 5-0 in the second set. Jasmine Paolini saved her serve in the sixth game of the second set, but Swiatek then easily won the match on her serve. Top seed Swiatek has thus taken her winning streak to 21 matches in the French Open. Her record at Roland Garros has now become 35-2.

23-year-old Swiatek of Poland is the first player after Justine Henin to win three consecutive titles at the French Open. Henin did this feat from 2005 to 2007. Swiatek also won the French Open title in 2020. Apart from this, she also won the US Open in 2022. In this way, her record in the final of the Grand Slam tournament has become 5-0.

12th seed Paolini of Italy reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. She had not progressed beyond the second round of any Grand Slam tournament before reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open in January this year. Olini, however, has a chance to win the women’s doubles title in which she has paired up with Sara Errani. In the final to be held on Sunday, they will face the pair of 2023 US Open champions Coco Gauff and Katrina Siniakova.
