Ind vs Eng Test series: Gill, Jaiswal shine on Day 1

On the first day of the first Test of the 5-match Test series against England on Friday (20 June), Indian batsmen showcased their prowess. After Yashasvi Jaiswal, captain Shubman Gill scored a century in Leeds. After this, Rishabh Pant scored a half-century. Gill scored a century in the first innings as Indian captain. With this, he registered his name in the club of legends Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli. Rishabh Pant scored a half-century to complete 3000 runs in Test cricket and made a big record in his name.

England won the toss and decided to bowl first. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul’s 91-run opening partnership left no stone unturned to prove Ben Stokes’ decision wrong. Debutant Sai Sudarshan could not open the account after Rahul was dismissed for 42. India’s score till lunch was 92 for 2 wickets. After lunch, captain Shubman Gill came to support Yashasvi Jaiswal. Yashasvi and Gill did not let any wicket fall in the second session.

Gill scored a century in 140 balls

Yashasvi Jaiswal was out after tea after scoring 101 runs. Gill shared a 129-run partnership with him. After this Rishabh Pant came to the crease. Gill shared an unbeaten century partnership with Pant for the fourth wicket. Gill completed his century with the help of 14 fours in 140 balls. With this, he became the fourth Indian player to score a century in the first innings as a captain.

Pant completed 3000 Test runs

Rishabh Pant completed his half-century with a four. With this, he completed 3000 runs in Test cricket. Pant achieved this feat in 76 innings. Among wicketkeeper-batsmen, only Adam Gilchrist has been able to achieve this feat in fewer innings than Pant. The Australian legend had scored 3000 runs in 63 innings.
