Rohit Sharma announces retirement from Test Cricket

Indian team’s regular captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect. This has now put an end to the speculation about his future in the longest format. Rohit scored 4301 runs in 67 Test matches at an average of 40.57 with the help of 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries in his test career.

Rohit announced retirement on social media

Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket from his social media handle. He shared a picture of his Test cap on Insta Story and wrote in the caption – ‘I want to tell all of you friends that I am retiring from Test cricket. It is a matter of great pride for me to represent my country in this format. Thank you very much to all of you. I will continue to play for India in ODIs.’

Rohit has retired from T20

After leading India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title, Rohit Sharma along with Virat Kohli announced his retirement from this format. India won this title by defeating South Africa by seven runs. After leading the Indian team to the T20 World Cup title for the second time, both the veterans surprised everyone by retiring from T20. Now the 38-year-old batsman has announced his retirement from the long format of cricket. Now he will be seen leading India only in ODIs.

India will get a new Test captain on the England series

After Rohit’s retirement from Test cricket, it has become clear that the Indian team will get a new Test captain on the England tour. Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are leading the race. This series will start in June.

Lean batting patch

Rohit went through a bad batting phase during the 2024-25 season. He scored 164 runs in 15 matches at an average of 10.83. Rohit was in poor form during the home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. After this, he did not play in the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to the birth of his son. When Rohit returned during the second Test in Adelaide, he did not open and sent Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul to open the innings. In the absence of Rohit, the pair of Yashasvi and Rahul had a partnership of 201 runs in the first Test.

Took command in 2022

Rohit Sharma was made the regular captain of the Test format in 2022. Since then till the recent Australia tour, he was the captain of Team India in the longest format of cricket. Under his captaincy, India played 24 Tests and out of these, Team India won 12 Tests. Team India had to face defeat in nine Tests. Three Tests were drawn.
