Shubhman Gill named new Test captain of India
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ended the wait and announced the name of the new Test captain of the Indian men’s cricket team. The BCCI has appointed opening batsman Shubman Gill as the successor of former captain Rohit Sharma. The young captain will face the challenge of England on his very first tour. The new captain will also be under pressure to achieve great results in the difficult conditions of England.
Gill captain and Pant vice-captain
Left-handed star wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been appointed Gill’s deputy. Gill and Pant’s names were at the forefront in the captain’s race after Jasprit Bumrah refused to take up the role. Both these young players have played brilliant cricket in the last few years and have cemented their place in Team India. Gill is also the vice-captain of Team India in ODI and T20I cricket. He was Rohit Sharma’s deputy in India’s victorious Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE in February 2025. 25-year-old Gill has become one of the youngest players to hold this position in recent years.
Excellent captaincy in IPL
Right-handed star batsman Shubman Gill has proved his captaincy in the last 2 IPL seasons. In the current IPL 2025 also, the Gujarat Titans team captained by Gill has qualified for the playoffs. Now it will be interesting to see whether he is able to handle the command of the national team in the same way or not.
