Why Wawrinka can defeat Djokovic in the US Open finals

The Novak Djokovic-Stan Wawrinka rivalry has caught everyone’s attention ever since the pair dished out that 5 set epic at the Australian Open 2013. Although the Serbian World Number 1 is no stranger to Grand Slam finals here are the key factors which might stand against him in the US Open 2016 finals against Stan Wawrinka:

Stan Wawrinka: The Enigma

If there is one top ten player who has the capability to dispatch fellow top ten players with relative ease or bow out of the tournament against a player ranked well outside the top 100 it has to Stan Wawrinka. This enigmatic tendency is what makes Stan Wawrinka the dark horse in every tournament he plays.

Lack of Match practice for Novak

No matter how good a player you are it always pays off to have a few good matches under your belt in a major tournament. The 2016 edition of the US Open has been a weird one for Nole as he completed just 2 full matches out of 5 in the run up to the finals. The lack of match practice can work as a double edge sword- it can be benificial for him if the match goes into the decider or on the contrary he could be under pressure when playing crucial points due to lack of match practice. But not for nothing has Novak Djokovic been the world number 1 for such a long time so this factor shouldn’t effect him that much.

St’animal’ Wawrinka:

There is a reason why Stanislas Warinka has earned a name ‘Stanimal’- because of those big powerful ground strokes that can blow off any opponent off court when firing on all cylinders. Wawrinka and Del Porto are perhaps the two players that come to mind immediately who posses the firepower to break the defense of Novak Djokovic.

Knows how to win against Djokovic

Putting aside all arguments the major factor why Stan Wawrinka can be crowned the new king at Flushing Meadows is that he knows what it takes to defeat Novak Djokovic in a Grand Slam. Infact Wawrinka has overcome Novak Djokovic in both his Grand Slam title triumphs. And the bad news for Djokovic is that it wasn’t as if Novak was not playing at a 100% it was a case of Wawrinka simply being too good that day. Also Wawrinka has won both the Grand Slam Finals he has contested in so he is a big match player.
