Public hearing on UPCL’s proposed electricity rate hike: submit objections by August 8
After the increase in electricity rates in Uttarakhand on 28 March 2024, the Energy Corporation (UPCL) wants to increase the rates once again. For this, the Commission (UERC) wants to know the public’s opinion on the proposal of 8.54 percent increase in electricity rates sent by the Corporation to the Commission.
For this, people can give their objections and suggestions on this till August 8. Public hearing will be held in the Regulatory Commission on August 14. The Uttarakhand Electricity Regulatory Commission had announced an increase in electricity rates for the year 2024-25 on 26 April 2023.
While this increase was strongly opposed by the public, the Energy Corporation termed this increase as very nominal. The argument of the Energy Corporation is that the Electricity Regulatory Commission has not given the benefit of even the expenses it has already incurred. This has increased the financial burden on it.
A review petition was filed in the Commission on behalf of the Energy Corporation. In this, a proposal for an increase of 8.54 percent was sent afresh. Approval has been sought to recover this increase between October 2024 and March 2025. This time, instead of directly approving the proposal of the corporation to increase the rates for hearing, the commission has first sought suggestions from the public on it.
Public upset due to repeated increase in electricity rates
The common man has to bear the brunt of repeated increase in electricity rates by the Energy Corporation. Earlier, electricity rates used to increase only once a year. Now, along with the increase for the whole year in March, there is a separate increase every month under Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment.
