Uttarakhand to collect ‘Green Cess’ on Out-of-State Vehicles from 2025

To save the environment, Uttarakhand is planning to raise revenue of crores annually through Green Cess, which will be taken as entry fee from outside vehicles. To be implemented from 2025, this system being started on the lines of Himachal Pradesh will give economic strength to Uttarakhand.
Green Cess on other state vehicles entering Uttarakhand
The Uttarakhand Transport Department has planned to connect 17 cameras installed on the state borders with new technology. Under this new system, green cess will be collected from vehicles coming from other states. At present, this cess is being collected only from heavy commercial vehicles, but now preparations are on to implement it on private and small vehicles as well. Currently, a fee of Rs 40 to 80 is collected per vehicle through manual process. Through the new system, this process will be completed through online fast tag or wallet, due to which the state is expected to get a huge increase in annual revenue.
Big increase in revenue
At present, Uttarakhand earns an income of Rs 5 to 6 crore every year from the green cess collected from heavy vehicles. But after the implementation of the new technology, private vehicles will also be included, which can bring the estimated revenue up to Rs 75 crore.
Special preparations for automatic system
To make the new system successful, the Transport Department will implement the Automatic Green Cess Collection System with the help of a private company. The tender process for this has started and the company will be selected in the first week of December. After this, this system will be implemented from January. A data center will be built to monitor this entire system, in which information of all vehicles entering Uttarakhand will be recorded. Along with this, automatic number plate recognition will be done through cameras with the help of Intelligent Tolling System (ITS). This new technology will make revenue collection easier along with empowering the state economically.
