Earthquake tremors were felt twice in the morning in Uttarkashi

Earthquake tremors were felt twice in Uttarkashi and many surrounding areas on Friday, January 24. Due to panic, people came out of their houses. Information is being collected from all tehsils by the Disaster Management Department. It is being told that the earthquake tremors were felt at around 7:42 am. Due to the earthquake, debris and stones fell from the landslide zone of Varunavat mountain. After this, tremors were felt again at 8:19 am, the intensity on the Richter scale was 3.5.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Uttarkashi, five km below the ground. District Magistrate Dr. Meherban Singh Bisht has instructed the officials to collect information about the impact of the earthquake in all the tehsil areas of the district. At present, there is no information about loss of life or property from anywhere in the district.

Why does an earthquake occur?

There are 7 plates inside the earth, which keep rotating continuously. The zone where these plates collide more is called the fault line. Due to repeated collision, the corners of the plates bend. When more pressure is created, the plates start breaking. The energy below finds a way to come out and after the disturbance, an earthquake occurs.

Know what is the meaning of the epicenter and intensity of an earthquake?

The epicenter of an earthquake is the place just below which geological energy is released due to movement in the plates. The earthquake vibration is more at this place. As the frequency of vibration goes further, its effect reduces. Still, if there is an earthquake of intensity 7 or more on the Richter scale, then the tremor is strong in the surrounding 40 km radius. But it also depends on whether the seismic frequency is upwards or in the range. If the frequency of vibration is upwards, then less area will be affected.
