Landslide on Yamunotri trek route, rescue operations underway

A sudden landslide in clear weather near Naukanchhi on the footpath to Yamunotri Dham caught everyone by surprise. Eyewitnesses said that suddenly four to five big boulders fell from the hill along with debris. Three to four people were buried in it. Locals say that water leakage could be the reason for this. The incident occured on June 23.

The bodies of a teenager and a man have been recovered from the boulders and debris. One to two more people are feared to be buried. The SDRF team is engaged in searching for the buried people.

The trek in Yamunotri has been halted. The pilgrims are staying at Janki Chatti halt and are waiting for the rescue operation to be over. District Magistrate Prashant Arya has also reached Janki Chatti with a team of landslide experts. The experts are conducting a survey regarding the causes of the landslide.

The journey to Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath Dham is smooth. The Kedarnath trek route has also become slippery after monsoon entered the state.
