Australia records hottest 12 month period on record

Australia recorded the hottest 12 months amidst tropical cyclones, severe floods and massive coral bleaching incidents. A senior government climatologist Simon Grainger said that the 12-month period between April 2024 and March 2025 will be 1.61 degrees Celsius above average. This temperature is the hottest since records were started more than a century ago.

Regarding the hottest day, climatologist Simon Grainger said that the temperature has increased by 1.61 degrees Celsius above average in the 12-month period between April 2024 and March 2025. In this way, this is the period of the hottest days since the temperature record began more than a century ago. He told the AFP news agency that this is certainly part of a continuous global pattern.

He said that “we are seeing temperatures since April 2023 that are much hotter than anything seen in the record.” Grainger said that the previous hottest time was in 2019. At that time the temperature was 1.51 degrees Celsius above average. Grainger said, “This is a very significant difference.” He added that “This is much more than what we would expect from uncertainties due to rounding only. The difference here is much more than that.” The record was measured on a 12-month rolling basis rather than a calendar year.

He said that “There has been continuous heat in all parts of Australia. Especially in Western Australia. We saw very hot weather. And we did not see periods of very cold weather – we did not see very cold winds.”

During this period, many areas of Australia, from the arid region to the tropical coast, have been hit by the weather in recent months. Warm waters in the Coral Sea spawned a tropical cyclone. Which devastated densely populated coastal settlements on the country’s east coast in March.

According to a study by the Australian National University, the average sea surface temperature around Australia in the year 2024 was the highest on record. Grainger said that this record continued in the months of January and February as well. There was not much drop in sea surface temperature during this period.

Along with this, according to 6 international databases, the year 2024 has been recorded as the hottest year. Scientists have an opinion that burning of fossil fuels has caused long-term global temperature rise.

Australia has abundant reserves of coal, gas, metals and minerals. Due to the mining of all these and fossil fuels, economic development has been happening uninterrupted for decades.

But if seen, this increase in Australia’s temperature is happening due to intense heat, forest fires and drought. Scientists have linked all these reasons to climate change.
