Colombian presidential candidate shot, in critical condition

Colombian opposition senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe was shot in Bogota on Saturday. He was seriously injured in the attack. The government has condemned the incident and called it an ‘attack’. 39-year-old Uribe is in critical condition. One person has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia said on social media, ‘Violence is never a solution. I really hope Uribe recovers soon and is out of danger.’

On Saturday, there was chaos in Colombia’s capital Bogota when the country’s potential presidential candidate and anti-establishment senator Miguel Uribe Turbay was attacked during an election rally. The attack took place in a public park in the Fontibon area, where Uribe was present among his supporters and was giving a speech. A video has surfaced in which the sound of continuous gunfire can be heard. A total of eight firing sounds can be heard. According to Uribe’s party ‘Democratic Center’, ‘some armed attackers shot him from behind.’ It can be seen in the video that the first bullet hit his head from behind. In the pictures that went viral on social media after the attack, Uribe is seen soaked in blood. Serious injuries are visible on the head and back.

One suspect arrested

The injured Uribe was immediately taken to a medical center in the city. Bogota Mayor Carlos Galan informed on X that Uribe is getting emergency treatment and the entire medical system of the capital is on alert to shift him to a bigger hospital if needed. Bogota police have arrested a suspect from the spot. However, the central government has issued a statement saying that a reward has been announced for help in the arrest of the remaining culprits involved in the attack.
