General elections 2025 in Germany: CDU wins 208 out of 630 seats

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has lost the general election. His Social Democrats Party (SDP) won 120 seats out of 630 seats. It has received only 16.5% of the votes. Chancellor Scholz has accepted defeat. His party has reached the third position in the election results.

The coalition of conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party has won 208 seats. It has received 28.5% of the votes.

The second biggest victory in the election has been achieved by the radical right party (AfD). This party has won 152 seats. The party has received 20.8% of the votes. For the first time since the Second World War, a radical right party has won so many seats in Germany.

315 seats are required for a majority in Germany, and no party seems to be able to touch this figure alone. Therefore, a coalition government is considered certain to be formed.

Who is the German Chancellor

Germany has a democratic system just like India. Like India, Germany also has a parliamentary system. Germany’s Lok Sabha counterpart is called Bundestag, which has 630 seats.

Just like the head of the government in India is the Prime Minister, Germany has a Chancellor. In both countries the President also has a formal post.
