Herd Immunity against Coronavirus not possible without vaccine says WHO

In many countries around the world due to the corona virus pandemic, it is being claimed that there has been development of herd immunity in people due to infection. However, the World Health Organization has rejected any such claim, saying that the world is not in a state of herd immunity against coronavirus anywhere. Some researchers at Oxford University have previously claimed that herd immunity is developing among people in Britain. An earlier Oxford study claimed that the level of herd immunity is already so high in Britain due to seasonal infections such as common colds so that the people there can prevent the secondĀ  deadly corona virus wave.

WHO stated that herd immunity is achieved exclusively through vaccination. Most scientists believe that to prevent the spread of the virus, at least 70 percent of the population should have antibodies that defeat the deadly virus. However, some experts believe that a protective effect may arise if even half the population has corona virus-fighting immunity.

WHO’s chief of emergency affairs doctor Michael Ryan, at a press conference on Tuesday, rejected the theory that we should not live in the hope of gaining natural herd immunity. He said that as a global population, we are nowhere near the situation that is necessary to stop the spread of the virus.

Corona virus solution is not herd immunity

He further said that herd immunity is not a solution, nor is it any solution that we should look at. Most studies to date have shown that only 10 to 20 percent of the population have related antibodies, which can be helpful in causing herd immunity to people. However, herd immunity cannot be detected at such a low rate of antibodies.

What is herd immunity? How is it achieved?

Herd immunity is not the name of a medical procedure. If an infectious disease is spread, herd immunity is the stage when a certain part of the population becomes immune to that disease. That means the virus is not spread in the rest of the population. The term herd immunity is commonly used in the context of vaccination. But herd immunity can be achieved even when a significant number of people are immune after infection. According to this, if a certain population is immunized, then those people will not be able to infect anyone else. This will break the chain of community transmission.
