Joe Biden withdraws candidacy from the US presidential election 2024

US President Joe Biden on Sunday announced that he will not contest the presidential election 2024. Biden has withdrawn his candidacy. Along with this, he has supported Vice President Kamala Harris as the new candidate of the Democratic Party. Biden’s decision came after the presidential debate with Republican rival and former President Donald Trump last month, after which some leaders of the Democratic Party were pressuring him to withdraw from the presidential candidacy. Biden has announced this through a post on X.

Biden said that he will address the nation this week and will continue to play his role as President and Commander-in-Chief until his term ends in January 2025.

Joe Biden wrote on social media, “Serving as your President has been the greatest honor of my life and I have always intended to run for re-election, but I believe it is in the best interest of my party and country that I do not contest the upcoming election and focus solely on fulfilling my duties for the remainder of my term as President.”

This decision of 81-year-old Biden has come four months before the voting in America on November 5.

Biden supported Kamala Harris on X and said, “Today I want to give my full support to Kamala Harris to become our party’s candidate this year. Democrats – now is the time to come together and defeat Trump.”

After Biden’s refusal to contest re-election, the way is now clear for Vice President Kamala Harris to run for the presidency.

However, it is not yet clear whether other senior leaders of the Democratic Party will challenge Kamala Harris or the party will choose to nominate itself.
