Russia hit by the world’s sixth-largest earthquake, measuring 8.8 in magnitude

The world’s sixth largest earthquake struck Russia’s eastern peninsula Kamchatka. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude of the earthquake was 8.8. It occurred at 4:54 am on Wednesday as per Indian time.
According to Reuters, a tsunami up to 5 meters high has hit Kamchatka. Due to this, many buildings have been damaged. USGS said that the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 19.3 kilometers from the ground.
Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov posted a video and said that today’s earthquake was the most powerful in decades. He said that a kindergarten school has been damaged.
According to Japan’s NHK television, the first tsunami waves one foot high have reached near the country’s eastern coast. Japan has asked 20 lakh people in the capital Tokyo to go to safe places. Apart from this, its Fukushima nuclear reactor has been evacuated.
