Tariff war: Canada imposes duty on American goods after US action

The tariff war between Canada and the US has deepened. This comes as a response to US President Trump’s decision imposition of 25 percent import duty on Canadian products.

Canada’s Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc on Sunday announced the imposition of import duty on American goods. He also released a list of goods that are imported from the US. This step has been taken as a retaliatory action. This will affect goods worth about 30 billion US dollars.

The list of goods released by Canada includes US-made liquor, household appliances, tools, firearms, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, clothes etc. This step has been taken a day after US President Donald Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on Canada and Mexico.

Along with this, an additional 10 percent duty has been imposed on goods coming from China. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister candidate and Justin Trudeau’s rival Chrystia Freeland said, ‘We do not want this fight, but we are not going to lose it either.’

Freeland called the tariffs a ‘terrible’ idea and a ‘lose-lose’ situation. At the same time, she argued that it would harm Americans, as they depend on Canada for many basic goods. President Trump has admitted that his decision will ‘hurt’ citizens but he argued that it is ‘worth the price’.

He wrote in a post on X, ‘Will there be some pain? But we will make America great again. It will all be worth the price that has to be paid.’ Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced at a news conference on Saturday night that Canada would retaliate by imposing a 25 percent tariff on ‘US $ 155 billion worth of US goods’. The first set of tariffs will take effect from Tuesday.

Meanwhile, China and Mexico have also expressed their dissatisfaction with Trump’s decision. In a statement, the Chinese Commerce Ministry said it would file a lawsuit against the US at the World Trade Organization for its ‘misbehavior’, the Global Times reported.

The ministry said, ‘China is completely dissatisfied with the US tariffs imposed on Chinese goods and strongly opposes it. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that Mexico would impose retaliatory tariffs. She proposed creating a working group with the top public health and safety teams from both countries to address shared concerns.
