Srinagar to become 9th Nagar Nigam in Uttarakhand

Pauri is preparing to make a municipal corporation (Nagar Nigam) by upgrading the Srinagar Municipality Council in Garhwal district. In this regard, the Urban Development Ministry has started the process. When Srinagar Municipal Corporation comes into existence, it will become the first of the hilly areas and the ninth nagar nigam of the state. The way in which work is being done at high level with regard to Srinagar, it is believed that this corporation will come into existence before the Panchayat elections. According to sources, Pithoragarh and Uttarkashi were also in the municipal race, but due to non-reception of the public there, it was left to the future.

There are currently eight municipalities in the state and all of them are in the plain areas. In view of this, the state’s existing government has also decided to elevate some cities of the hill region last year. According to sources, the Pithoragarh and Uttarkashi municipal councils had the intention of making the nagar nigam in this episode, but the matter did not go ahead after the objection raised by it.

Meanwhile, the MLA from Srinagar and the Minister of State in the Government, Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, suggested to the Divisional Minister Madan Kaushik to make Srinagar a municipal corporation. Prior to the code of conduct for the Lok sabha election, some delegations of Srinagar also met the Urban Development Minister in this regard. Urban Development Minister directed the department to do homework in this regard.

Sources said that work has been started for Srinagar Nagar Nigam. Under this, the surrounding villages including Sikot will be included in the corporation so that it can meet the standards of the population. If needed, it can be expanded to the extent of Kirtinagar. If everything goes well, the government will declare Srinagar a Nagar NigamĀ  before the possible Panchayat elections in September.
