Rafael Nadal wins historic 21st Grand Slam

Rafael Nadal broke the three way deadlock between him, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic by winning the Australian Open for the second time in his career. Two sets to love down Nadal showcased his mental fortitude once again as he denied his opponent a first Grand Slam title down under.

Comeback for the ages

The Australian Open 2022 couldn’t have started on a more controversial note with title favorite Novak Djokovic sent away due to vaccine rules in the country. Few would have bet on Nadal on winning the title as the Spaniard was coming from a long injury lay-off. But Nadal showed the world once again why the Big-3 have been a dominant force when it comes to Grand Slams. The 35 year old couldn’t have scripted a better comeback after losing the first two sets in the final.

With his historic 21st Grand Slam win- the most by a male player, Rafa Nadal also became just the second player to have won all the Grand Slams atleast two times.

Before the epic final today, Rafael Nadal had never won a match at the Australian Open after losing the first two sets. Apart from this, after losing the first two sets in a Grand Slam match, he won only twice, while he had to face defeat 19 times. But this time Nadal turned the tide. The last time he did this was in 2007 at Wimbledon. Apart from this, Nadal has won for the fourth time in the final of any Grand Slam in a match lasting five sets.

Nadal has won the French Open a record 13 times, the US Open four times and Wimbledon and the Australian Open twice in his career. He won the Australian Open title for the first time by defeating Roger Federer.
