5 time US Open champion suffered shock defeat at the hands of Australian John Millman. Millman upset the world number 2 in 4 sets. This was Federer’s first loss against a non top 50 player in New York. Millman’s first top ten victory lands him a spot in the QF against Djokovic. The 20-times grand slam champion suffers a shock 3-6 7-5 7-6 7-6 defeat after he won the first set convincingly. Deep into the second set though things took a turn for the worse for Federer as he inexplicably lost his first serve. At one point the Swiss landed just 2 out of 20 first serves in which proved to be a decisive factor in the match. “I’m probably in a little bit of disbelief. He’s been a hero of mine and today he was definitely not at his best. But I’ll take it” said Millman after the match.
