India at Commonwealth Games 2022: Sindhu, Srikanth make winning starts in Badminton singles

Top Indian shuttler PV Sindhu advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Games women’s singles event with an easy win in Birmingham on Thursday. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, defeated Fatima Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq of Maldives 21-4, 21-11 in 21 minutes in the round of 32.

In singles, Sindhu, the silver-medallist of the previous edition, did not break a sweat in the match while Fatima was facing a lot of difficulties. In the first game, Sindhu used drop shots to collect points.

In the second game, Fatima presented a bit of a challenge initially and she was tied at 9-9 with Sindhu as the Indian player gave away points through simple mistakes. But then Sindhu took an 11-9 lead till the break. She then went on to collect points comfortably to make it to the last 16 while the opponent could manage only two points.

Former World Number 1 Srikanth Kidambi too won his opening singles match at Commonwealth Games 2022. He defeated Daniel Wanagaliya  of Uganda to seal his place in the pre-quarterfinals. Srikanth won the match 21-9, 21-9.

Meanwhile Amit Panghal has assured a medal for India in boxing. He has reached the semi-finals. Amit defeated Lennon Mulligan of Scotland in the second quarterfinal of the 48kg-51kg (flyweight) category. Amit won this match by 5-0 scoreline.
