Novak Djokovic defeats Daniil Medvedev to claim 9th Australian Open title

World number 1 Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open for a record ninth time on Sunday at Rod Laver Arena. The Serb claimed an 18th Grand Slam title after beating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-2 and 6-2 in the title match. Nine times Djokovic has lifted this trophy in the last 13 years. His streak in the finals in Melbourne stands at 9-0.

He also was the first and only player in the world to win the Australian Open for the third consecutive and ninth time in total. Djokovic also became the first player in Australian Open history to reach the final three times after the age of 30.

Big 3 gap narrows

Only behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in terms of most Grand Slams. This is Djokovic’s 18th Grand Slam and is now just 2 titles away from Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s 20 Grand Slam records.

Fourth-ranked Medvedev looked out of the match from the first set. Interestingly, Medvedev had an edge over Djokovic in the last five matches, in these five matches, Daniil had won three and Novak had 2 matches, but today the score was equal.
