Ind vs SA 1st Test: Bumrah’s 5-for puts India ahead on Day 1

India consolidated its position on the first day of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Proteas succumbed to the lethal bowling of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. After bowling out South Africa for 159 in the first innings, India lost the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal to score 37 runs in their first innings at the end of the first day’s play. Team India is still 122 runs short of the visiting South Africa’s total in the first innings.

When play was stopped early due to bad light, KL Rahul was at the crease with 13 runs and Washington Sundar with six runs. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 12 runs, clean bowled by fast bowler Marco Jansen.

Earlier, India had restricted South Africa to a low score thanks to a brilliant bowling performance led by Jasprit Bumrah (5/27). Bumrah was well supported by Kuldeep Yadav (2/36) and Mohammed Siraj (2/47). Axar Patel (1/21) also took a wicket. For South Africa, opener Aiden Markram scored 31 runs, while Tony de Zorzi and Wiaan Mulder contributed 24 runs each. This was the 16th 5 wicket hall for the Indian bowling spearhead.

Mohammed Siraj’s two wickets in one over added to South Africa’s troubles. Siraj, who had conceded 34 runs in his first six overs, worked tirelessly and finally dismantled South Africa’s lower middle order with a brilliant double wicket in his 10th over. He dismissed Kyle Verreynne and Marco Jansen in the space of four balls.
