Passenger vehicle (PV) sales in the Indian market surged in March 2026, with most automakers reporting higher sales compared to the same month last year. Domestic carmaker Maruti Suzuki maintained its position as the country’s largest carmaker, while Tata Motors overtook Mahindra for the second spot. Hyundai, Skoda, and Honda recorded single-digit growth, while Renault and Nissan saw the highest growth.
Maruti Suzuki Sales
Maruti Suzuki recorded domestic sales of 169,428 units in March 2026, a 10.27 percent increase over the previous year. The carmaker remains the market leader, driven by strong demand in its core segment.
The company’s compact segment, which includes popular models like the Baleno, Swift, Dzire, Wagon R, and Celerio, contributed 71,789 units in March. The SUV segment, which includes the Brezza, Grand Vitara, Fronx, and e-Vitara, recorded sales of 71,356 units, reflecting continued demand.
Tata Motors Sales
In March 2026, homegrown car manufacturer Tata Motors secured the second position with domestic sales of 66,971 units, a 29 percent increase over the previous year. This also represents a month-on-month increase of approximately 19 percent compared to the 56,447 units sold in February 2026.
The car manufacturer continues to benefit from strong demand for its SUV range, with models like the Tata Nexon and Tata Punch contributing significantly. Tata Motors’ CNG and electric vehicle portfolios are also contributing to overall sales growth.
Mahindra & Mahindra Sales
Suv manufacturer Mahindra recorded domestic sales of 60,272 units in March 2026, up 25 percent from 48,048 units a year ago and nearly 13 percent higher than the previous month’s 53,281 units.
Car manufacturer Mahindra is relying on its SUV-based portfolio, with models like the Mahindra Scorpio N, Thar, and Thar Roxx driving sales. Deliveries of recently launched models, including the Mahindra XUV 7XO and XEV 9S, have already begun.
Hyundai Motors Sales
Hyundai’s domestic sales increased to 55,064 units in March 2026, up from 51,820 units in the same month last year, representing a 6.3 percent increase. The carmaker’s performance is being driven significantly by its core lineup, with models like the Hyundai Creta, Venue, and i20 contributing significantly to overall sales.
Recent updates to models like the Hyundai Verna and Exter are also expected to boost demand in the future. Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO Tarun Garg stated that the company recorded its highest-ever quarterly domestic sales of 166,578 units in the fourth quarter (Q4) of FY2026, and hopes that upcoming product updates will help maintain this momentum.
