GST collection set a new record

The government collected Rs 2.37 lakh crore from Goods and Services Tax (GST) in April 2025. There has been an increase of 12.6% on an annual basis. This is a record of GST collection.
Earlier, the record of highest GST collection was made in April 2024. Then the government had collected Rs 2.10 lakh crore. On Thursday, May 1, the government has released the GST figures.
Rs 1.90 lakh crore collected from domestic transactions
During this period, the government has collected Rs 1.90 lakh crore tax from domestic transactions. There has been a growth of 10.7% on an annual basis. At the same time, the government has collected 46,913 crore GST through imports. There has been an increase of 20.8% in one year.
- In April, the government refunded a total amount of Rs 27,341 crore.
- Net GST collection for July after refunds stood at Rs 2.09 lakh crore.
- This is 9.1% higher than the same period last year (July 2023).
GST collection shows the health of the economy
GST collection is an important indicator of economic health. Higher collections indicate strong consumer spending, industrial activity and effective tax compliance.
In the month of April, businesses often clear year-end transactions from March, leading to an increase in tax filings and collections.
GST was implemented in 2017
The government implemented GST across the country on 1 July 2017. After this, 17 taxes and 13 cess of the central and state governments were removed. On the completion of 7 years of GST, the Finance Ministry posted about the achievements achieved during the last seven years.
GST is an indirect tax. It was implemented in 2017 to replace various indirect taxes such as VAT, service tax, purchase tax, excise duty. GST has four slabs of 5, 12, 18 and 28%.
