The Indian stock market has a tradition of Muhurat trading on the occasion of Diwali. Although the stock exchange is closed on this day, it is typically open for just one hour in the evening, known as Muhurat trading. However, this time, Muhurat trading will take place in the afternoon instead of the evening on October 21st, 2025.
A one-hour special Muhurat trading session will be held on this occasion on the BSE and NSE stock exchanges from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm. A 15-minute pre-opening session for Muhurat trading will be held from 1:30 pm to 1:45 pm.
BSE-NSE issued a circular today
Trading will also be available in various segments such as equity, commodity derivatives, currency derivatives, equity futures and options, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) during the Muhurat trading time slot. BSE-NSE announced this in a circular issued on September 22nd.
On normal days, the market opens Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. There’s a pre-market session from 9:00 am to 9:15 am, followed by a normal session until 3:30 pm.
Last year, the market closed with a gain of 335 points.
Last year, on November 1, 2024, during the Muhurat trading session, the Sensex closed at 79,724, up 335 points. The Nifty also gained 99 points, closing at 24,304.
From 2020 to 2023, the stock market has closed with gains every time during Muhurat trading. In 2023, the Sensex closed with gains of 354 points, 525 in 2022, 295 in 2021, and 195 in 2020.
Muhurat Trading is Considered Auspicious
In Hindu tradition, Muhurat is a time when planetary movements are considered favorable. Starting any venture during Muhurat ensures positive results. Therefore, many Hindus initiate their investments during the auspicious time of Diwali, when the stock market opens for an hour.
Most people prefer to buy stocks as a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi. According to beliefs, people who trade during this one hour have a better chance of earning money and achieving prosperity throughout the year.
