Fatal collision on Haridwar bypass: Woman inspector killed, constable injured

A woman inspector riding a scooty going from Dehradun to Haridwar for Kanwar duty died after being hit by a speeding bus, while a woman constable (who was riding pillion) is injured. The accident took place on Saturday morning on Haridwar bypass, Dehradun. The accused bus driver has been detained by the police.

Nehru Colony SHO Devendra Chauhan said that 58-year-old ASI Kanta Thapa, a resident of Mukhani, district Nainital, was posted at Badkot police station in Uttarkashi. These days, due to Kanwar duty, she was living in the residential complex of Police Station Cantt. On Saturday, she had to go to Haridwar for Kanwar duty. She left for Haridwar on a scooty in the morning with woman constable Shakuntala posted at Cantt police station.

A speeding private bus coming from behind hit the scooty on the Ajabpur flyover on Haridwar bypass at around 10:30 am. Due to this, both the police personnel were thrown on the road. The driver could not control the vehicle and she came under the bus. While Shakuntala was thrown on the road and got injured. Kanta Thapa died on the spot in the accident. Police reached the spot and admitted injured Shakuntala to a private hospital near the flyover. While Kanta’s body was sent to Coronation Hospital for postmortem. After the postmortem in the afternoon, the body was handed over to the family. Chauhan said that the bus has been seized and the driver has been taken into custody. Police is investigating the matter.
